Artist Statement (spring 2008)
For me painting is one of the many avenues that allow me to channel my perception of
the world into an object that others may interact with. The options are endless with
the paint quality and I find myself visiting extremes in every sense of the word in order
to gather the knowledge required to make decisions. For the next part of the semester
I want to try and incorporate what I have learned with backgrounds and textures and
mesh that with a figure or inanimate object. This semester I feel that I have flattened
my work and veered from representational objects. My backgrounds are a give and
take of the subject matter at hand and sometimes are the only focus desired. The
interaction of foreground to the opposing force is a symbol of how I feel that I mesh
into the world. The world is a part of me and not just because I exist in it but because I
am pushing against it, in literal terms and mentally. Every moment that I have been
breathing has been documented and gone through my body. I am a filter that simply
houses information and creates a new way for the world to connect it to something
else. Not only am I using my most current memories and feelings when painting but
every instance before that point in time is aiding in the decisions being made for my
piece. Painting allows me to be extreme and safe and inappropriate at the same time -
without consequence. The energy that comes from these repressed desires needs to
escape and whatever that needs to be is done. I am inspired to create.
