Art-Related Work Experience
Apr 2017 – Oct 2019 Horizon House, Life Enrichment Associate
This is a retirement community in Seattle where I worked in the supported living facility and did activities with residents who have severe dementia. It required a high degree of emotional intelligence, flexibility, and patience because I was dealing with adults who are receiving end of life care with declining communicative skills, cognitive abilities, and physical function. I spent a lot of my day doing various types of art and creative programs with the residents, adapted the processes to fit their needs.
Mar 2014 – Dec 2015 Respite Care Provider, for a woman with autism
I spent several hours working with a young woman with autism who was working on her interpersonal skills through art and play. She was high functioning but needed some help focusing her flow of conversation, ability to relate to the person she was talking to and fostering empathy. In this job, I demonstrated my capacity to show patience with someone who has a socially labeled disability and ability to connect with someone who society traditionally creates barriers for and obstacles to connect with.
Aug 2014 – Nov 2014 Interim Director (nonprofit) E7 Kids Cafe
During the director’s maternity leave I was responsible for managing day to day operations of an inner city after school program. The program aimed at providing a hot meal and snack to youth who need a safe structured environment after school. They received help with homework, reading, and group play. During this time, I coordinated volunteers, monitored the daily program, and coordinated a move from an old building to a church basement. In this job I demonstrated my capacity to manage staff and volunteers, work in a chaotic environment, and step into a demanding situation without much training.
Mar 2011 – Nov 2011 US Peace Corps Volunteer, Secondary School English Teacher, Kazakhstan
My training group worked in the education sector of the Peace Corps and we were put in the classrooms to help foster English fluency, critical thinking skills, and other experiential ways of learning. We were trained in lesson planning, public speaking, and how to best work in groups. It required a great deal of effort on my part to learn how to teach, learn about a new culture, adjust to a different lifestyle, and thrive - which I managed to do. In this job I demonstrated my capacity to work in and facilitate groups, adjust and live in a different culture, being self-reliant, taking risks, and show my dedication to being service oriented.
June 2009 – Aug 2009 Arts Director Assistant Intern (unpaid) CentroNia Charter School, DC
I completed an internship at a bilingual charter school in Washington, DC called CentroNia. I was an assistant to the Arts Director who was in charge of the art curriculum for the whole school. I assisted with the day-to-day classroom activities but one major project I took on was archiving over 3,000 pieces of artwork that was being stored in the art classroom. It was part of a bigger task of cleaning out the art room and storage area. By archiving the art, I was able to provide the school with a lot of wonderful images to use for advertising and promotion. In this job I demonstrated my capacity to work with a diverse population and age groups. I managed a large and tedious project on my spare time outside of the classroom which I initiated.
Jan 2008 – Dec 2010 Student Gallery Assistant and Painting Studio Work Study,WKU Art Department
In this job I demonstrated my capacity to work independently while also attending classes full time. I cleaned up other people’s messes and learned a lot about respect for my environment, taking responsibility for cleaning up my own mess, and how to have compassion for people who don’t mean to cause me grief.
